Executive Director

Carol obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Toledo. Her work on behalf of children includes mentoring, instruction, community involvement and providing financial support and direction through her various positions with theToledo Public Schools, Sylvania City Schools, Owens Community College, The Ability Center of Greater Toledo and Lott Industries.

In addition to Carol’s financial background, she has experience in organizational development and team building. Carol is currently a member of the United Way of Toledo’s Income CST and is working with their Workforce Development Committee on educational and career opportunities for high school students in Toledo Public Schools.

Carol is married to Randy and has 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Besides her love of music, she enjoys anything Disney, genealogy and golf.

President and Co-Founder

Jeff is a co-founder of BeInstrumental and serves as President of the organization. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and earned his MBA from the University of Toledo. He is the Director of Sales at Allshred Services in Maumee, Ohio and is the Founder of Daily Fantasy Cricket, an international fantasy sports website.

Jeff is extremely passionate about music and truly believes that every child should have access to musical education. An avid harmonica player, Jeff started taking violin lessons at four years old and played trombone in middle school – even joining a Ska band in the mid-1990’s. Jeff’s favorite musician is Bob Dylan and claims to have seen him nearly 70 times in concert (this has yet to be confirmed!)

He is a previous recipient of the 20 Under 40 Leadership Award in Northwest Ohio and sits on several committees for the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo. Lily joined the BeInstrumental Board in 2017. When Lily started band in junior high, she quickly fell in love with playing her trumpet. Her experiences perfecting her trumpet playing, as well as learning to juggle in high school, gave her a deep appreciation for the performing arts. This led her to get her BA in Music Education at Bowling Green State University. She went on to obtain an MBA and started her career as a certified public accountant at Plante Moran. She is currently employed as a Sr. Financial Accountant at BGSU. Lily plays trumpet in the Bowling Green Area Community Bands.

Past President and Board Member

Dr. Megan Eliason Rhodes is a teacher for the Sylvania City Schools, where she teaches general music to students in Grades K-5. Prior to her position with the Sylvania City Schools, Dr. Rhodes taught general, instrumental, and vocal music in the Toledo Public Schools, Columbus (Ohio) City Schools, Rantoul (Illinois) Township High School, and Memphis (Tennessee) City Schools.

Dr. Rhodes received a B.M. in Music Education from Ohio University, a M.A. in Music Education from Teachers College-Columbia University, and an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from Ohio University. She also teaches courses in Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Policy at Bowling Green State University.

Treasurer and Co-Founder

Mike serves on the board as treasurer and has been active in BeInstrumental since the founding of the organization.  Mike is principal and founder of Aptus, an accounting firm in Sylvania, Ohio. He is a certified public accountant.

Mike’s interest in music began in elementary school when Mike started playing saxophone for the school band. Mike continued playing the sax throughout junior high and high school in concert and marching bands. In high school, Mike participated in several band competitions and received a number of awards. Mike went on to play sax in college for the Central Michigan University Marching Chippewas where he completed four years of service participating in numerous performances both on and off the field.

Given the tremendous impact that music has had in Mike’s life, there was no question when the opportunity came to get involved in BeInstrumental that Mike wanted to be a part of helping kids to have the same opportunity to get a music education.


Laurel is a board certified music therapist who began working for the Monroe County Intermediate School District in August 2007. She completed her Undergraduate degree in Music Education at Miami University and her Masters in Music Therapy from Western Michigan University. Laurel specializes in autism spectrum disorder, community based settings, early childhood education, age-appropriate educational collaboratives, and user-friendly data collection. Laurel has presented various workshops on school music therapy both at the State and National Level. She works as an adjunct professor at Lourdes University teaching an Introduction to Music Therapy for non music majors. In addition Laurel has been a guest lecturer at Western Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, and University of Michigan. Laurel currently serves as Vice President for Michigan Music Therapists Association.

Music has always played an important role in Laurel’s life. She began playing the flute when she was in 4th grade. Laurel met her husband Mike in the music department at Miami University. They have a son Joel who is two years old who loves singing and dancing.

Co-Founder and Lifetime Board Member

John is a co-founder of BeInstrumental and serves on the Board. He is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Business and the University of Toledo College of Law.

He currently works as corporate and securities attorney with the law firm of Dinsmore & Shohl, LLP in their Detroit and Ann Arbor offices. John is also the co-founder of DFC (Daily Fantasy Cricket) and AmAlt Labs. John is conversational in German and Chinese. He took up music as an adult while attending law school. He currently plays bass guitar and was taught by Bill McDevitt of the Toledo Symphony.

John is married to Allison and they have one son, Tate and one daughter, Libbe. He currently resides in Perrysburg, Ohio.

Lifetime Board Member

Tamara has served on the board as Secretary of BeInstrumental since its early days. She is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and the Medical College of Ohio. She works as a McKenzie Certified Physical Therapist at Bedford Physical Therapy and Pool.

Tamara has many passions in her life. She enjoys being married to her best friend Jeff, raising her two sons, Gabriel and Avi, exercising regularly, reading, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and giving back to the community.

Board Member

Judy Szor is a retired Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with a BSN from University of Michigan, MEd from University of Toledo and MSN from Medical College of Ohio. While nursing and wellness have been the primary passions in her life, music is a close runner up. She started piano lessons at age 6 and has been continuously involved in music ever since. Presently she plays piano for her own enjoyment and is a long time member of the Toledo Choral Society, of which she is a past president. She believes strongly in the importance of music in childhood development and, having been married to Toledo’s ‘Mr. Music’ Sam Szor for forty years of her life, has seen many times over the amazingly positive effects that participating in music has on the lives of students. Judy is very excited to be a part of BeInstrumental to assist in bringing music to children who would not otherwise have the opportunity.

Board Member

Karen joined BeInstrumental in 2018. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and obtained a Master of Science in Health Administration from Central Michigan University. She is currently employed with HCR ManorCare.

Karen studied violin in grade school, under the direction of the late Jack V. Perrine, who was a distinguished violinist for The Toledo Symphony for twenty-five years and a music teacher for Toledo Public Schools. In college, Karen enrolled in piano and jazz music courses. Her taste in music ranges from Beethoven to Zeppelin, and she is proud to be Earth Wind & Fire’s biggest fan on the planet!

She has served the Toledo community as the Arts & Letters chairperson for the Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; offering sponsorships and grants to Toledo Public Schools students for art courses at the Toledo Museum of Art, ballet classes at Ballet Theater of Toledo, tickets to live music performances and fees for Toledo Youth Orchestra fees. Karen has also served on the Toledo Museum of Art Cultural Diversity Board and was a member of the Toledo Opera Guild.  She firmly believes in BeInstrumental’s mission to provide every child with access to music education.

She is married to Edward Sorina and they reside in Toledo.

Board Member

Shaun L. Strong, a native of Toledo, is a graduate of Whitmer High School. He studied English Literature at the University of Toledo. He joined the BeInstrumental Board in 2017 after learning about the foundation through Epic Toledo’s Annual Board Fair.

Although Shaun has very limited music ability, music has always been a passion and close to the heart. He joined the school band as a saxophonist in Jr. High and developed his love for music early in life. Music has always been a part of Shaun’s life coming from a musical family, several of which have recorded projects with notable artists and received awards.

Professionally, Shaun works for the City of Toledo where he began as an Intern in the Youth Commission and shortly thereafter worked in the Mayor’s Office under several administrations. Currently, he works in administration in the Division of Environmental  Services. His passion for event organizing is his driving force for helping to spread the vision of BeInstrumental and reaching as many children as possible with the gift of music.
